This little 5x7" snow scene was a beginners project in oils. The design is by Milton Lenoir. He did the most beautiful, soft snow and beach scenes in blue greys and peach.  So delicate.

We used Alizarin Crimson, Viridian Green and White to make the greys for the snow, and shaded the Burnt Sienna barn with Ultramarine Blue on the shaded side and Dioxazine Purple on the warmer side. I found beginners are fascinated with color theory- especially when they learn it as they paint.

Original design by Ann Kingslan, MDA.  I took this seminar with Ann and learned so much.  It remains one of my favorite pieces.

Original design by Peggy Stogdill, MDA.  This was a design created for fabric but  I liked it so much I painted it in oils.  I used a taupe background with white pearl stripes.

Original design by Peggy Stogdill, MDA.  This was an interesting project as we painted the tulip in grey values and then glazed the color over the top.  Painted on a  black green background

Original design by Peggy Stogdill, MDA.  A really pretty floral that I had matted and framed. I learned a lot about background treatments from this painting.

Original design by Margaret Wehking.  I dearly love strokework and although I changed the colors to suit my kitchen, this darling little pig goes with me from house to house.

First stage based with acrylics

Original design by Brenda McPeek.   Brenda's version is slightly larger, I left out some of the elements to fit the size board I had.  I love this technique of basing in with acrylics and then giving an oil glaze.  See the finished product below

The second stage is completed in oils.

This clearly illustrates the power of glazing.  A glaze is a transparent color applied over another.  I find this the "fun" part of painting and love to get to this stage

Original design by Kerry Smith. Adapted from "Study in Blue" by Ann Kingslan, MDA. This was a fun project to do and another one where glazing makes such a difference.

Original design by Peggy Stogdill, MDA.  An address book. This is such a lovely design and Peggy's instructions are so complete. This was the first project I painted after a 7 year hiatus.

Another design by Ann Kingslan, MDA. I took this seminar with Ann and no matter what I paint I always leave with my head packed with so much technique
that I've learned.  I really feel that a good teacher can unlock all kinds of doors for you  with their knowledge.

Original designs by Peggy Stogdill, MDA. I love fabric painting as a change of pace. No background prep and the dyes have proved to be really durable even with my cats!! I wash these pillows a lot!

Another interesting project packed with learning. Also one of my favorites.
This is the first stage painting without any glazing.

This is the finished painting.
Can you see the richness the oil glaze gives to the painting?
 It's such an interesting technique.

Original design by Diane Capoccia.
Yes I have even painted teddy bears.
I used a deerfoot to do the fur.
Each project seems to be a stepping stone along the painting path.
They were painted on the lid of a toy chest so this is actually quite large.
